Tutorial Video: Pump Control with the DCR-1005/1006 Controllers

 

The DST ultrasonic sensors and the DCR ultrasonic controllers work together to provide stand alone pump control for simple applications in need of basic logic and hysteresis. This video shows you how to go through the set-up process of the DCR 1005/1006 series controller, including connecting the sensor and operating the controller.

Narrator: Hello, and welcome to APGTV. I’m Shaw Merrill, and today we’re want to show you how to perform pump control with the DCR-1006. It’s a simple controller that uses any one of our DST ultrasonic sensors, but has several modes for different requirements.

For this example, we’ll be using one of the controller’s four relays in a fill control application with hysteresis – with distance starting from the face of the transducer.

We’ll turn the pump on at the lower level, that’s at 48 inches from the transducer face. And leave it on until we come within 36 inches of the transducer. It will then remain off until the level drops back down to 48 inches away.

Wiring Instructions

Step 1: Here we go. To access the terminal block for connecting the sensor, you need to remove the cover of the controller. With the cover removed, you’ll notice a circuit board with a screen and some buttons. This also has to be temporarily removed in order to connect the sensor and the power.

Step 2: Now it’s time to connect A/C power. Use the terminal blocks to the far left.

Step 3: Connect the DST sensor to the terminal block. This is done on the block labeled DST. The cable will vary depending on the connection type.

Step 4: Once the sensor and the power are connected on the terminal block, plug in the power cable. If the transducer is clicking, it’s getting power and should be ready to go.

Step 5: Once the sensor is connected properly, reattach the top circuit board at each corner with the four screws.

Programming Instructions

At this point, you’ll use the controller interface to program for pump control.

The four buttons on the circuit board are pretty simple. The two left buttons, from left to right, are the mode up and mode down buttons. The two right buttons, from left to right, are the value up and value down buttons.

You’ll see how these work together as we go along.

Step 1: We first have to use mode 1 to select the units of measure. Push either of the mode buttons until the screen shows the number 1. Use the value buttons to scroll through the options.

We’ll want inches for this example. Push any of the mode buttons to select option 1 and return the main menu.

Step 2: Now we’ll scroll up to mode 12 to set the high level of our relay. This mode is known as “Begin Trip 1” in the user manual.

Because we’re doing fill control with hysteresis, and the distance starts from the transducer face, this will turn the pump off. We’ll set this to 36 inches from the transducer face. Push any of the mode buttons to select 36 inches and return to the main menu.

Step 3: Use the mode up button to jump to mode 13. This is our low level for the relay, and is referred to as “End Trip 1” in the user manual. This will turn the pump on. So we’re going to set it at 48 inches from the transducer face.

Push any of the mode buttons to select 48 inches and return to the main menu.

Step 4: Finally we have to select our trip type. Use the mode up button to get to mode 14. We want to use trip type 5 to give us fill control with hysteresis.

Use the value up button to find option 5, and push any of the mode buttons to select it and return to the main menu.

Once you’ve programmed the controller, run a quick test by raising and lowering the ultrasonic to test your trip points. The red light will turn on when the pump should activate at 48 inches. It will turn off with the pump at 36 inches.

With a successful test, you’re finished and can close the controller cover.
