Steel mills process large steel coils by unwinding
the coil, passing the steel through a pickling bath,
then rewinding it. This process requires accurate roll
diameter measurements. The coils must be
measured before they are loaded on the unwinder.

Several process parameters are critical when
controlling roll diameter in industrial processes. An
engineer cannot simply install an ultrasonic sensor
and get a reliable representation of roll diameter.
Several factors such as sensitivity, blanking range,
ultrasonic signal strength, signal filtering
parameters, and noise and temperature
compensation must be carefully dealt with to
provide reliable diameter information. The UC-WEB
offers an easy to configure drop in solution. It even
comes preset to handle those requirements normally
seen when controlling steel roll diameter.
The value of this solution is further enhanced by
its flexible output configuration which allows you to
automatically invert the 0-10 volt signal for unwind
and rewind situations. In addition, two different
operating configurations can be saved and easily
accessed via a simple digital input. This is a great
time saver in the event that different materials are
produced on the same line. |
