Water and sewage must be transported from one place to another through pipelines. Potable water is shipped from the water treatment plant to homes and businesses, sometimes over many miles, over hills and even under rivers and streams.
Potable water originates in a filtration plant which processes surface water sources, such as a reservoir, or ground water, The filtered and disinfected water is then pumped to the point of use, either homes or businesses.
Constant pressure must be maintained in the system to ensure correct pressure at the point of use. Pressure transmitters are used to monitor and control system pressure, through valve adjustment or pump motor control.
Lift stations are used to move sewage from homes and businesses to a treatment plant. Sewage pipelines use gravity to transport the waste products. A constant grade or pitch on the line must be maintained. When natural elevation changes (hills, valleys) occur, a lift station moves the sewage closer to the surface so the grade can be re-established, without digging
deep trenches.
Ultrasonic sensors have proven to be an excellent means for monitoring the level of liquids in a sewage wet well. The lift station pump is controlled by the signal from the ultrasonic sensor.
Submersible hydrostatic pressure sensors provide another well-established technique for monitoring well levels. Bubbler systems, though an older technology, still provide a useful means of control.
Remote telemetry options complete the system and allow the sensor and pump controller to be remotely monitored at a central station.
