Open Channel Flow Tutorial Video | Blog

Flow volume in open channels is an important measurement for any water management organization, especially in the water and wastewater industry. Furthermore, using an ultrasonic sensor for the measurement is a well established practice - one in which our LPU-2428 excels.

So how does it work? This video tutorial shows how to program the LPU-2428 ultrasonic sensor for open channel flow measurement. Let us know what you think, or if you have any questions.

Narrator: You’re watching APGTV. I’m Shaw Merrill, and today we’re going to show you how to program your LPU-2428 ultrasonic sensor to measure flow using the LPU-2428 programming software.

To begin programming the LPU-2428 click on the basic set up button found on the left side of the screen.

Next, select the units to be displayed on the right.

Set the application to flow. Select the flow units and flow rate to be displayed.

Then click on the send button near the bottom of the screen to send these settings to the sensor. Wait until the progress bar completes to move to the next step.

Now we’re ready to set up the remaining parameters. Click the application set up button in the left menu.

Then, select the desired flow type on the right. This will either be flume, weir, or equation.

Next, select the flume type, weir type, or equation, according to the flow type you selected.

Next, enter the max flow, or distance from the sensor face to the maximum flow level. Remember, the sensor has a 1-foot blanking distance.

Now enter the zero flow, or distance from the sensor face to the minimum flow level.

To complete this section, enter the constant, exponent, length, etc, for the parameters shown on the screen. All constants and exponents must be in feet or meters.

For abnormal weirs, you can use the linearization table option. See the manual for details on using this option.

Click the 4-20 set up button in the left menu, and enter your minimum milliamp set point; this is the 4mA setting. It’s usually set to zero. Next, enter the maximum milliamp set point; this is the 20mA setting.

These may be the same as your max and zero flow distances, or they can be different.

Press the send button to save these settings, and wait for the progress bar to complete.

Your sensor is now set up and ready to go! The remaining advanced features in the programming software will default to automatic settings. To change these settings, please refer to the LPU-2428 user manual programming section.
